XHF: NM Fantasy Football '08 (Official In-Season Discussion Thread) |
Lead | |
|
Alright well given that Yahoo finally updated their site to allow early signups for FF I figured I'd naturally go ahead and just start one big central
thread here to not only allow anyone and everyone interested to sign up well ahead of time for the XHF: NM league draft, but more importantly so that
during the actual season later on we can perhaps take this to a whole new level of excitement/drama never quite seen before with some heavy
duty trash talking, bragging about teams and what not along the way. Now as far as this year's league rules/settings are concerned I did first off make certain to try and duplicate as many of the exact same setup details as
possible from years gone by here at XHF, seeing as how I always thought Steve/HurriShark did incredibly good work as Commish up until this point, so just like
anything else why fix what's not even broken to begin with, ya know? Though I will mention however that just a few minor things will be different this time
around (assuming everyone else is cool with that too), namely trying to get as many as even 16 team owners involved and for the playoffs bumping up the amount
of teams from 4 in '07 to 6 in '08, since with a larger league it only makes sense to let a few more teams into the actual playoffs and more
importantly to let the top two seeds (based on overall season record) get a first round bye as their direct reward for being on top. But otherwise the roster
positions/size and stat scoring details remain pretty much intact from Steve's previous leagues so far, and with all this being said the league ID# is
54596 and the password is "gridiron" so feel free to join (http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/register/joinprivateleague_league_select?.scrumb=)
and as long as we can get enough folks signed up on time (shouldn't be an issue hopefully given our past interest from XHFers) the live draft is scheduled
to take place Saturday June 28th at 8 p.m. Eastern.

June draft? No offense but I would NEVER feel confident drafting THIS early on what with all the legal/bargaining agreement/injury probs out there and
retirements and whatnot. Why are they letting us sign up this early? Also noting that adding another round to the playoffs cuts a week off the season.

Ok well first off we're only just over a month out from the start of the preseason as it is (training champ even sooner), so honestly it'd be different
if we were talking about a draft in early May here since yeah that would be absolutely absurd but the very end of June isn't nearly as bad as you're
making it out to be neccessarily, as long as I can remember Yahoo has always begun registrations for FF in mid-June so nothing new there by any means. Also,
even though on the surface it seems otherwise (blame ESPN and their lack of better headlines for this) the whole labor agreement thing is irrelevant at this
point since that won't have any legit impact on the league until at least 2 to 3 full years from now when the agreement itself expires, though you're
right that there's already various legal/injury issues hovering around as it is, but then again none of them are to the point where it'll adversely
effect our draft to a serious degree in the first 4-5 rounds at least. Again not trying to downplay a single bit of what you're saying but I constantly
keep up with offseason news/injuries too so believe me I know what I'm talking about here when I tell you straight up that there's no worries for our
draft if it goes down a little earlier than expected. All in all though I do see where you're coming from and if it'll resolve things I'll gladly
bump the draft back to say July 12th at the same time on that Saturday night which seems like a reasonable enough compromise. I just simply don't want to
hold it off TOO long from now since just like anything else the novelty/peak interest of it may wear off to some who join if we don't follow that up soon
enough with an actual draft to get things moving along smoothly, because we have to make certain as many as possible are present at the draft for the sake of
keeping the league balanced/competitive from start to finish ya know, and if the best way to accomplish that is by holding it sooner then so be it I'd say.
Now as for your last question I can't say I disagree all that much myself, but see the sole issue in replacing say week 14 with 17 for one of the rounds is that just like every other year we'll have a TON of key players resting that last week once their teams clinch certain playoff seeds in real life, which in itself tosses ANY real FF skill out the window and that's the last thing we need happening when our league title is supposed to truly mean something and not just be another useless week 17 crapshoot like many other Yahoo leagues are these days. I guess the biggest thing limiting what I can do is that Yahoo only has so many scenarios in place to choose from on how the playoffs are set up for team numbers/weeks, but personally I'd like to see the regular season last 14 full weeks too so as long as I don't hear too many folks griping about it later on (when they're one of about 12-14 teams cut out all at once like this) I'll go ahead and switch the setup to a four team playoff with 15-16 being the weeks in place for this. I just really wanted to have 6 playoff teams if at all possible since 6 to either 14/16 overall (depending on our final total soon) seems like the perfect ratio of those eliminated to not eliminated if you get my drift here, but 4 teams definitely make it to the point where if you're not a diehard player like you technically should be then you're history when the playoffs open plain and simple. Mainly though I just want this league to reach a point it's never reached before and in order to pull that off we definitely need ALL the more skilled guys involved like you are Dave, hell I even emailed Reeshi (who's still very active at Yahoo I notice) for this too since he's another past champion of our league and will be a major force to deal with if he'll see my message in time to get involved, but first and foremost this league needs to be ultra competitive throughout or otherwise, what's the point in the first place if not for massive bragging rights afterward?

im not going to read all that bull shit because that's all it is is bull shit. make the draft the second weekend of august so that people can at least get
a view on the first two preseason games before the draft because the people who have a life and cant watch every training camp on nfl network wont have any
knowledge of what rookies or free agents are stand outs on there new teams

Oh good grief, yet again I try to do something genuinely nice for everyone at the board but all that happens is that I get it tossed RIGHT back in my face as
usual, and treated like complete crap in general on top of that? Believe me I know I'm long-winded and all when it comes to my posts but at the same time
not everyone can sum up their thoughts with a few simple sentences the way you can Steve, I know you'd like to think otherwise but the reality of things is
exactly the opposite unfortunately. And ya know the strangest part of all here is that I've always been nothing but nice to you regardless, yet somehow
I'm constantly the main "bad guy" around here just because I have my own opinions about certain things and have my own distinct
style of expressing them unlike others. Anyway though the draft is set for August 9th now at 8 so hopefully everyone is actually satisfied for once, and not that I should ever even have to by now but just to prove to you once and
for all that I'm not the asshole you make me out to be I made sure to hand over commish powers of the league to you just because it's really YOUR own
creation in the first place and the last thing I want to do is make it seem otherwise, but just like always I'm sure you'll find another random reason
later on to fault me on around here so I guess it is what it is...

LMAO Randy, well regardless you really should consider joining our league just for the hell of it if nothing else but if you just aren't interested in
general that's all good too. Oh and apparently Tommy/Reesh from the old XHF has joined the league now, even after I shot him an email about it I never even
remotely saw this coming but it's definitely damn good to see him again anyhow, maybe he'll even post/RP some here on the board since I just sent him a
link to that too on the league page but who knows....

I'm signing up
I mean come on, how embarrasing will it be if you lose to a fucking Brit.

Haha yeah true, if anyone has a ton to lose this year it's me since I won the last two league championships (based mostly on skill) and somehow haven't
lost a single head to head matchup in almost 2 full years now (which is absurd luck on the other hand). But much appreciated that you did decide to sign up
anyhow and already from the looks of things this season's league will completely decimate any of the others to date, I just hope we can even make it to the
full 16 team limit (which is possible with how far off the draft is still) since that would be flat out insane to have 16 teams fighting for just 4 playoff
spots later on, though 10 teams alone already guarantees this to be competitive the whole way. Either way though I've got my work cut out for me BIG time
and so will everyone else, which is really all you can ask for to make any FF league worthwhile in the first place. Oh and if anybody happens to want live
scoring updates during the season just let me know on AIM too, I already bought StatTracker like I usually do so might as well get good use out of it this way
instead of anyone having to wait until Mondays each week to figure out what's really going on in the first place.

A) I don't understand stattracker for football ... I don't need it cuz I can make my decisions anytime during the week unlike in baseball where
it's day by day.
B) If I'd played Gaffney over Stallworth I'd have beaten you by exactly 1 point Pat ... don't forget how close you came to being beat by a guy who'd never played before! OH! THAT'S A CHALLENGE BIATCH! C) I intend to go up in standings this year. And up from 2 ... yeah that's right ...

we fix that absurd rb rule that was makeing rb's way over valued?
|
|||
NoMercyMaster2001 |
|||
|
Yeah I made certain to take that out this time before handing the Commish powers over to Steve, I agree that it REALLY skewed the whole league and made
RB's far more valuable than they're ever meant to be in actuality. And to Dave, yes you could have beaten me in that instance but a
point is a point and still you did not, still my streak remained intact so we'll definitely find out
who's better once and for all come week 6 of this season, won't we?
Even regardless of who I end up with post-draft I'm confident the outcome will be exactly the same as all the other times before but granted
you'll have your one shot at me in the regular season, as will everyone else for that matter so we shall see what you're able to do with it this time,
whether that be an epic upset...or just another all too forgettable chokejob.

like i said last year, the rbs ARE the most valuable people thats why they get so many points no matter how the stats are
![]() |

NoMercyMaster2001 |

Plenty fair enough, though WR's do rank right with them when it comes to PPR leagues like ours, but you're exactly right that RB's are intended to
be the main "workhorses" when it comes to fantasy football so that's definitely one aspect we shouldn't taint. It's just that unlike with
receptions for WR's the rushing attempts for RB's can't possibly reflect who had the best "stats" persay in any given week. Like for
instance we had countless times before where completely random RB's put up big points just because they were on such putrid offenses that they
were being force-fed the ball 40 times a game
, rather
than having a legit backup as say LT, Adrian Peterson and so many others do who would naturally spell them off and on to prevent so much wear and tear in such
a long season. I mean in theory it was a great idea to at least do a test run with last time out but until every team adopts the RB committee approach that
they eventually should it's just not something that'll work out the way we'd want it to neccessarily, and I do hate to admit as
much since certain free agent stragglers are THE primary reason I never lost to begin with in '07 but parity should be the goal even if that does mean most
of us having .500 records or worse come playoff time later on...

quick poll on the draft. I've set the order to the rankings of last year. this year there is an option of snaking or non snaking draft. snaking is the
normal way to draft where in the second round the last pick gets to pick first and then it goes back around. non snaking would be like how the nfl and nba
drafts normally go.

Snaking gives an element of fairness to the draft so NMM and I don't end up with a ton of power packed players early on so I vote snaking

NoMercyMaster2001 |
|||

Awww damn, just when I thought I was about to build a powerhouse all over again with this little loophole of sorts.
But, Dave's spot on that if we leave it as is we'll both literally
clean house in the first few rounds with 2-3 extremely high caliber players each while everyone else is more or less left to pick up the assorted scraps in our
wake each time around. Then on the other hand even the snaking doesn't solve everything either since as Dave hints about we'd still each have 2
straight picks basically even though we'd have to wait longer to reach that point of using them in the first place. All in all both styles
have their advantages/disadvantages but in the interest of fairness I'll also side with Dave here and vote for snaking, even if it's only a perceived
type thing in itself.

I vote whatever gives me a TINY glimmer of hope.

I'd like to say all your fuss doesn't matter because this thing is already mine to begin with....but I can't. For a sports writer/journalist I really have limited knowledge of the NFL...nice to be back with the boys (and girls if they're still around?) in some form of competition though even if it isn't on the RP board. |
